Recognizing that women are significantly under-represented in engineering and technology careers, has led organisations and business to bring more women into the fold through campaigns and calls to action.
To this end, The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), a Nigerian non-governmental organisation working to empower girls and women socially and economically, using information and communication technologies (ICTs), is now accepting applications for its 7th Girls Technology Camp. The annual W.TEC Girls’ Technology Camp is a 2-week residential technology education and mentoring programme aimed at helping girls develop an early interest in computing.
The 2014 edition of the camp will take place from August 3 – 16, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria and is open to female secondary school students in JSS2 – SS2, aged 11 to 17 years.
During the camp, the girls participate in technology workshops and leadership as well as learn to:
- Write Code using Scratch and Raspberry Pis
- Build Apps using AppInventor
- Design Computer Games
- Build Computers
- Design Websites
- Produce Films
The young women will work both individually and in teams for project assignments. The activities will be highly interactive, with emphasis on practice and learning-by-doing. Interested girls, or parents of girls, can visit the camp website and apply online.
W.TEC, headed by Oreoluwa Somolu, also runs a number of technology-facilitated and educational projects each year targeted at women and girls in ICT.
