It is no longer a speculation, Twitter has finally announced the mute feature for the iPhone, Android and web apps.

Unlike on the many 3rd- party apps that have had this functionality for as long as we remember, Twitter’s mute feature only allows you hide specific users, not keywords or any of that extra mute functionality a lot of us have gotten used to. You can hide specific users from your timeline, without unfollowing them, for as long as you want and that’s just about it.

To mute a user from your timeline, you have to click on more and then select mute. To mute a user from their profile, you click on the gear icon and then select mute. You cannot however set how long you want the user muted for. To unmute them, you have to did it manually, the same way you muted them.

If you are using Twitter on the web, you should already see the mute feature live. Android and iPhone users will have to wait a while, as Twitter promises the feature will roll out “in the coming weeks”

As is now commonplace whenever a new feature is announced, no mention is made of support for the Windows Phone app, which happens to be an official version built by Twitter Inc.
