A while back, we let you guys in on Samsung’s plans to release a Tizen OS smartphone in Q2 2014. Well, they just announced one.

The Samsung Z is the latest Samsung phone to be announced this year. But unlike the popular Galaxy range, it runs on Tizen, rather than Android. Tizen is the home-brewed operating system Samsung has been tinkering with for a while now. It is sort of a reincarnation of the old Meego OS that the Nokia N9 ran on. It’s also the same OS the latest Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch runs on.

The Samsung Z will ship with:

  • 4.5 inch HD Super AMOLED display
  • 2.3 GHz quad-core processor
  • 8 MP primary and 2.1 MP front camera
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Support for 2D and 3D graphics and
  • of course, Tizen OS that Samsusng promises will deliver faster boot times, better multitasking, and faster browsing, among other things.

Judging by the spec highlights, this is no pushover device. Perhaps Samsung is finally taking its first huge step away from over dependence on Google’s Android? Which is a bit confusing considering they already signed a deal with Google.

The device will be released first in Russia, Q3 2014. There is currently no info about pricing
