I think we can unanimously agree by now that (Nigerian) Twitter is more than “just Twitter”. If we didn’t realize this before, the unprecedented reach of the recent #BringBackOurGirls campaign is a fresh corroboration of that fact.

There  has never been a better time to tap into Twitter’s valuable reach beyond the virtual world. And who better to benefit from this than politicians themselves? Especially as the 2015 general elections are barely a year away.

While quite a number of prominent politicians have since jumped on the bandwagon, a large number of them are still yet to catch on.

Here a 10 politicians we wish would join Twitter.

Muhammadu Buhari

Known for his no-nonsense approach to governance during his reign as Military Head of State in the early ’80s, the 3 time democratic presidential candidate always has something to say on national matters. It would be interesting to have him contribute to the ongoing Twitter conversations, especially in the lead up to the 2015 general elections

Adams Oshiomhole

Even in his virtual absence , the ex National Labour Congress leader and now Governor of Edo state has always managed to make waves on Twitter.

Olusegun Obasanjo

The ex-President has been quite vocal about his opinions of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and even in his virtual absence, he does get a lot of Twitter love.

Sarah Jibril

The “one-woman-one-vote” Presidential Candidate who  famously proclaimed that “my one vote will continue to haunt Nigerian women”. She was the only woman to contest against President Jonathan in the 2011 PDP primaries. Now serving as the President’s Special Adviser on Ethics and Values, she’s also remembered for once dismissing the President’s critics as people “lacking in home training”.

Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda

The “daddy” himself. Need I say more?

Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello

The true daughter of her ex-President father, she’s also known for sharing her often controversial views on national matters. More recently, she wrote an open letter to members of the Boko Haram sect.

Rotimi Amaechi

rock star of sorts (at least in his home-town of Rivers state) and publicly sworn enemy of President Goodluck Jonathan. He sure would pull a massive following.

Erelu Olusola Obada

A staunch PDP proponent, she has served as the former Deputy Governor of Osun state and Minister of State for Defence.

Chris Anyanwu

Acclaimed journalist turned politician, famous for her imprisonment by the late Sani Abacha administration, for reporting a failed coup d’état against is regime.

Sanni Yerima

The former governor of Zamfara state who is infamous for marrying a 13 year-old girl and sticking to his decision, despite criticisms from the general public. His decision evoked the  #ChildNotBride campaign on Twitter. Would have been nice to observe him defend his stands on Twitter.

So what do you think? Are there any other politicians you wished were around and active on Twitter?
